What is dry mouth?1,2,3

Dry mouth, also called xerostomia, is generally caused by lack of or decreased salivary secretion. Dry mouth can make it difficult to speak, eat and drink. Extreme dry mouth and damage to the salivary glands can produce significant and permanent mouth and throat disorders and can impair a person's quality of life. Dry mouth affects about 10% of all people and is more common in women than men and more common in older people and in people taking different medications.3
